MOTIVATING STUDENTS: General Strategies

Capitalize on students' existing needs.
Students learn best when incentives for learning in a classroom satisfy their own motives for enrolling in the course. Some of the needs your students may bring to the classroom are the need to learn something in order to complete a particular task or activity, the need to seek new experiences, the need to perfect skills, the need to overcome challenges, the need to become competent, the need to succeed and do well, the need to feel involved and to interact with other people. Satisfying such needs is rewarding in itself, and such rewards sustain learning more effectively than do grades. Design assignments, in-class activities, and discussion questions to address these kinds of needs. (Source: McMillan and Forsyth, 1991)

Make students active participants in learning. Students learn by doing, making, writing, designing, creating, solving. Passivity dampens students' motivation and curiosity. Pose questions. Don't tell students something when you can ask them. Encourage students to suggest approaches to a problem or to guess the results of an experiment. Use small group work. See "Leading a Discussion," "Supplements and Alternatives to Lecturing," and "Collaborative Learning" for methods that stress active participation. (Source: Lucas, 1990)

Ask students to analyze what makes their classes more or less "motivating." Sass (1989) asks his classes to recall two recent class periods, one in which they were highly motivated and one in which their motivation was low. Each student makes a list of specific aspects of the two classes that influenced his or her level of motivation, and students then meet in small groups to reach consensus on characteristics that contribute to high and low motivation. In over twenty courses, Sass reports, the same eight characteristics emerge as major contributors to student motivation:

  • Instructor's enthusiasm
  • Relevance of the material
  • Organization of the course
  • Appropriate difficulty level of the material
  • Active involvement of students
  • Variety
  • Rapport between teacher and students
  • Use of appropriate, concrete, and understandable examples

MOTIVATING STUDENTS

Some students seem naturally enthusiastic about learning, but many need-or expect-their instructors to inspire, challenge, and stimulate them: "Effective learning in the classroom depends on the teacher's ability ... to maintain the interest that brought students to the course in the first place" (Ericksen, 1978, p. 3). Whatever level of motivation your students bring to the classroom will be transformed, for better or worse, by what happens in that classroom.

Unfortunately, there is no single magical formula for motivating students. Many factors affect a given student's motivation to work and to learn (Bligh, 1971; Sass, 1989): interest in the subject matter, perception of its usefulness, general desire to achieve, self-confidence and self-esteem, as well as patience and persistence. And, of course, not all students are motivated by the same values, needs, desires, or wants. Some of your students will be motivated by the approval of others, some by overcoming challenges.

Researchers have begun to identify those aspects of the teaching situation that enhance students' self-motivation (Lowman, 1984; Lucas, 1990; Weinert and Kluwe, 1987; Bligh, 1971). To encourage students to become self-motivated independent learners, instructors can do the following:

  • Give frequent, early, positive feedback that supports students' beliefs that they can do well.
  • Ensure opportunities for students' success by assigning tasks that are neither too easy nor too difficult.
  • Help students find personal meaning and value in the material.
  • Create an atmosphere that is open and positive.
  • Help students feel that they are valued members of a learning community.

Research has also shown that good everyday teaching practices can do more to counter student apathy than special efforts to attack motivation directly (Ericksen, 1978). Most students respond positively to a well-organized course taught by an enthusiastic instructor who has a genuine interest in students and what they learn. Thus activities you undertake to promote learning will also enhance students' motivation.

Dear Patrick,

I was then an only child who had everything I could ever want. But even a pretty, spoiled and rich kid could get lonely once in a while so when Mom told me that she was pregnant, I was ecstatic. I imagined how wonderful you would be and how we'd always be together and how much you would look like me. So, when you were born, I looked at your tiny hands and feet and marveled at how beautiful you were. We took you home and I showed you proudly to my friends. They would touch you and sometimes pinch you, but you never reacted. When you were five months old, some things began to bother Mom. You seemed so unmoving and numb, and your cry sounded odd -- almost like a kitten's..

So we brought you to many doctors. The thirteenth doctor who looked at you quietly said you have the "cry du chat" (pronounced kree-do-sha) syndrome, 'cry of the cat' in French. When I asked what that meant, he looked at me with pity and softly said, "Your brother will never walk nor talk."

The doctor told us that it is a condition that afflicts one in 50,000 babies, rendering victims severely retarded. Mom was shocked and I was furious. I thought it was unfair. When we went home, Mom took you in her arms and cried. I looked at you and realized that word will get around that you're not normal. So to hold on to my popularity, I did the unthinkable ... I disowned you. Mom and Dad didn't know but I steeled myself not to love you as you grew.

Mom and Dad showered you with love and attention and that made me bitter. And as the years passed, that bitterness turned to anger, and then hate.

Mom never gave up on you. She knew she had to do it for your sake. Every time she put your toys down, you'd roll instead of crawl. I watched her heart break every time she took away your toys and strapped your tummy with foam so you couldn't roll. You'd struggle and you'd cry in that pitiful way, the cry of the kitten. But she still didn't give up. And then one day, you defied what all your doctors said -- you crawled.

When Mom saw this, she knew that you would eventually walk. So when you were still crawling at age four , she'd put you on the grass with only your diapers on knowing that you hate the feel of the grass your skin. Then she'd leave you there. I would sometimes watch from the window and smile at your discomfort. You would crawl to the sidewalk and Mom would put you back. Again and again, Mom repeated this on the lawn.

Until one day, Mom saw you pull yourself up and toddle off the grass as fast as your little legs could carry you. Laughing and crying, she shouted for Dad and I to come. Dad hugged you crying openly.

I watched from my bedroom window this heartbreaking scene. Over the years, Mom taught you to speak, read and write. From then on, I would sometimes see you walk outside, smell the flowers, marvel at the birds, or just smile at no one. I began to see the beauty of the world around me, the simplicity of life and the wonders of this world, through your eyes. It was then that I realized that you were my brother and no matter how much I tried to hate you, I couldn't, because I had grown to love you.

During the next few days, we again became acquainted with each other. I would buy you toys and give you all the love that a sister could ever give to her brother. And you would reward me by smiling and hugging me.

But I guess, you were never really meant for us. On your tenth birthday, you felt severe headaches. The doctor's diagnosis -- leukemia. Mom gasped and Dad held her, while I fought hard to keep my tears from falling. At that moment, I loved you all the more. I couldn't even bear to leave your side. Then the doctors told us that your only hope was to have a bonemarrow transplant. You became the subject of a nationwide donor search. When at last we found the right match, you were too sick, and the doctor reluctantly ruled out the operations. Since then, you underwent chemotherapy and radiation.

Even at the end, you continued to pursue life. Just a month before you died, you made me draw up a list of things you wanted to do when you got out of the hospital. Two days after the list was completed, you asked the doctors to send you home. There, we ate ice cream and cake, run across the grass, flew kites, went fishing, took pictures of one another and let the balloons fly.

I remember the last conversation that we had. You said that if you die, and if I need of help, I could send you a note to heaven by tying it on the string of a balloon and letting it fly. When you said this, I started crying. Then you hugged me. Then again, for the last time, you got sick.

That last night, you asked for water, a back rub, a cuddle. Finally, you went into seizure with tears streaming down your face. Later, at the hospital, you struggled to talk but the words wouldn't come. I know what you wanted to say. "I hear you," I whispered. And for the last time, I said, "I'll always love you and I will never forget you. Don't be afraid. You'll soon be with God in heaven."

Then, with my tears flowing freely, I watched the bravest boy I had ever known finally stop breathing. Dad, Mom and I cried until I felt as if there were no more tears left. Patrick was finally gone, leaving us behind.

From then on, you were my source of inspiration. You showed me how to love life and live life to the fullest. With your simplicity and honesty, you showed me a world full of love and caring. And you made me realize that the most important thing in this life is to continue loving without asking why or how and without setting any limit. Thank you, my little brother, for all these.

PANDAI ABC? PILIH MAKAN BUAH DAN SAYUR

Sayur-sayuran dan buah-buahan merupakan salah satu makanan yang terdapat dalam piramid makanan. Ia merupakan sumber makanan yang murah dan mudah didapati. Buah-buahan dan sayur-sayuran kaya dengan zat dan vitamin yang penting untuk tubuh dan kesihatan.

APA YANG ADA DALAM BUAH DAN SAYUR?

Zat dan mineral
Kepentingan

Contoh buah dan sayur

Vitamin A
Baik untuk kesihatan kulit dan mata serta melindungi diri daripada serangan penyakit.
Sawi, bayam, kalian, lobak, lada merah, tomato, mangga, betik, tembikai.

Vitamin B

Baik untuk mengelakkan kepenatan dan kelesuan.
Sayuran hijau (sawi, bayam, kalian, kangkung), sayur kekacang
Vitamin C
Baik untuk kesihatan gigi.
Brokoli, nenas, oren, mangga, kiwi,jambu batu, betik, belimbing.

Kebanyakan buah-buahan dan sayur-sayuran mempunyai vitamin A,B dan C serta mineral-mineral yang lain. Jadi, singkatan ABC merupakan satu pendekatan dalam menggalakkan pengambilan sayur-sayuran dan buah-buahan di kalangan kanak-kanak.

BAGAIMANA MENGGALAKKAN KANAK-KANAK MAKAN SAYUR DAN BUAH?

1. Sentiasa AMALKAN..
* Menjadikan buah sebagai snek menggantikan makanan ringan.
* Menggantikan minuman berkarbonat dengan jus buah-buahan.
* Makan sayur dan salad atau ulam semasa makan tengahari dan makan malam.

2. Sentiasa BUAT…
* Menambahkan sayur dalam masakan dan hidangan seperti mi goreng dan sandwich.
* Masak sayur dengan air sedikit.
* Masak dengan cara yang rendah lemak seperti kukus, rebus, celur, tumis dengan sedikit minyak.
* Elakkan memasak yang terlalu lama.

3. Sentiasa CAKAP….
* Yummm.yummm…sedapnya makan buah dan sayur ini..
* Slurpppppp…lazatnya jus buah ini..
* Kurp..Kurp..krup…enaknya sayur kacang ini..
* Wowww…ada pelbagai warna dan rasa buah dan sayur.
* Eeeekkk…buah dan sayur ini menghilangkan rasa lapar dan dahaga..

Jadi…
Pengambilan buah-buahan dan sayur-sayuran yang kaya dengan vitamin dan mineral dapat meningkatkan daya ketahanan badan daripada penyakit, menghindari sembelit dan mengurangkan risiko kejadian penyakit jantung dan kanser. Jika kanak-kanak diajar memakan sayur pada peringkat awal, risiko mendapat penyakit dapat dikurangkan. Pendekatan ABC dapat membantu menggalakkan pengambilan buah dan sayur di kalangan kanak-kanak. Ini penting untuk kesihatan mereka. Jadi, dengan ABC, Anak anda Boleh Cuba… Teruskan membaca..
Manusia Masih Kekurangan Makanan
SETIAP tahun tanpa jemu pada 16 Oktober, dunia meraikan hari makanan. Tetapi secara sedar atau sebaliknya kita sendiri tidak begitu mengetahui wujudnya hari khusus buat makanan untuk disambut. Kita barangkali tidak mementingkan hari tersebut walaupun kita sedar akan pentingnya makanan untuk kita semua meneruskan kelangsungan hidup.

Kita perlu terima bahawa makanan ialah hak asasi manusia yang paling asas. Setiap yang bernyawa sama ada manusia atau binatang, mereka memerlukan makanan. Bagi manusia, ia memerlukan hak asasi ini untuk mengekalkan tenaga, bekerja, belajar dan terus hidup.

Tetapi malangnya, kira-kira 800 juta orang di seluruh dunia masih berlapar setiap hari.

Laporan Pertubuhan Makanan dan Pertanian (FAO) seperti yang dipetik oleh BBC News menyamakan bahawa kebuluran ialah manifestasi kemiskinan paling kritikal.

Lalu ia senada dalam menyelesaikan masalah yang satu ini.

‘‘Untuk membasmi kebuluran, kita perlu mengisytiharkan perang kepada kemiskinan,’’ kata laporan itu.

Perlu diingatkan bahawa 17 Oktober pula disambut sebagai Hari Membasmi Kemiskinan Sedunia dalam kalendar Pertubuhan Bangsa-Bangsa Bersatu (PBB).

Hubungan rapat di antara kemiskinan dan kebuluran bukan lagi satu kejutan besar sebenarnya. Adalah dianggarkan kira-kira 1.5 bilion individu hidup dengan pendapatan kurang daripada AS$1 dolar (RM3.70) sehari.

Dan setiap tiga saat, pasti ada seorang yang mati kerana faktor kebuluran.

Kebuluran bukan sahaja meragut nyawa, lebih buruk daripada itu ia ‘mengambil bersama’ semangat serta keupayaan untuk bekerja dan belajar.

Menurut FAO lagi, masalah kebuluran boleh merencatkan keamanan dan kemakmuran sesebuah negara selain memerangkap individu itu dalam kitaran kemiskinan yang sukar diatasi. Akibat kebuluran juga akan membawa kepada tahap kesihatan memburuk. Paling tidak diingini, kebuluran dan kelaparan diwarisi dari satu generasi ke generasi lain.

Tahun ini tema Hari Makanan Sedunia ialah Mengatasi Kebuluran, Memerangi Kemiskinan.

Ia memberikan suara dan saksi kepada laporan ekonomi yang terkandung dalam kajian terbaru FAO bahawa satu-satunya cara efektif untuk membasmi kemiskinan ialah dengan menghapuskan kebuluran.

Selebihnya dalam soal memerangi kebuluran, FAO akan juga mengeluarkan laporan ketiga mengenai masalah itu. Laporan itu dikenali sebagai The State of Food Insecurity In The World.

Ketua FAO, Dr. Jacques Diouf dalam ucapannya menyambut Hari Makanan Sedunia percaya bahawa wujud hubungan di antara makanan dan kemiskinan.

‘‘Adalah diakui bahawa kebuluran adalah natijah kemiskinan, tetapi saya percaya adalah benar juga bahawa kebuluran menyebabkan kemiskinan,’’ katanya dalam satu kenyataan FAO seperti dipetik oleh akhbar The Guardian. Tetapi beliau masih berhati-hati dalam membuat ramalan bahawa kebuluran akan dapat diatasi sepenuhnya jika kemiskinan dibasmi.

Soal kemiskinan seringkali berkait rapat dengan luar bandar dan pertanian.

‘‘Matlamat yang lebih khusus diperlukan ke atas masalah kebuluran dan pembangunan pertanian dalam ruang lingkup objektif membasmi kemiskinan.’’

Di negara membangun, sekurang-kurangnya 60 peratus penduduknya bergantung kepada tanah untuk mendapatkan makanan mereka. Bagaimanapun, begitu banyak isu bersabit dengan hak-hak tanah dan kualiti tanah bumi bermakna berjuta-juta orang akan kebuluran.

Mengambil kira bahawa 70 peratus mereka yang miskin dan kebuluran ini tinggal di luar bandar, FAO menegaskan bahawa pelaburan kerajaan dan swasta kini diperlukan di kawasan berkenaan jika dunia benar-benar mahu mencapai sasaran untuk mengurangkan kebuluran menjelang tahun 2015.

Dalam pada itu, Hari Makanan Sedunia bukan sahaja disambut kerana pentingnya makanan buat kita semua. Ia juga sebenarnya menjadi landasan dan matlamat bagi meningkatkan kesedaran antarabangsa mengenai masalah kebuluran yang kini membelenggu dunia.

Sekilas mengenai latar belakang Hari Makanan Sedunia, ia mula diraikan pertama kali pada tahun 1981, hari jatuhnya ulang tahun FAO diasaskan pada tahun 1945.

Tahun ini, seperti tahun-tahun sebelumnya , lebih 150 buah negara merancang beberapa majlis dan acara untuk memperingati hari yang penting untuk makanan itu.

Kira-kira 30 buah negara menyertai projek pendidikan global bagi memberi kesedaran kepada kanak-kanak mengenai masalah kebuluran dan kelaparan.

Sebagai contoh program yang dinamakan Feeding Minds, Helping Hunger, melibatkan gabungan bersama beberapa rakan antarabangsa termasuk UNESCO, Bank Dunia dan majalah Newsweek.

Duta Program FAO dan kempen tahunan, Tele-Makanan turut menarik perhatian selebriti-selebriti terkenal bagi menyertainya. Tahun ini misalnya, ia mendapat perhatian penyanyi Giberto Gil, Alanis Morrissette, Daniel Lanois, Femi Kuti dan Emmylou Harris.

Kalau kita belum lupa, sidang kemuncak makanan juga diadakan bagi memberitahu betapa masalah makanan ini perlu diselesaikan oleh dunia. Ia adalah forum yang mempertemukan pertubuhan badan bukan kerajaan (NGO), para pegawai PBB dan kerajaan serta sebagainya.

Mungkin hal makanan dan kemiskinan bukan isu besar diperdebatkan di beberapa buah negara di Asia, lebih-lebih lagi di Malaysia.

Tetapi sekali-sekala perlu diintai juga benua Afrika di mana masalah kebuluran dan kemiskinan ini masih belum dapat diatasi walau ‘perang habis-habisan’ diisytiharkan kepadanya.

Ia akan terus menjadi masalah yang cukup sulit untuk diatasi jika tiada sebarang kefahaman sama tentang hubungan makanan dan kemiskinan.

ORANG RAMAI DIINGAT BAWA KIT H1N1 SEMASA HARI RAYA

KUALA LUMPUR, 13 Sept (Bernama) -- Sempena cuti panjang sambutan Hari Raya Aidilfitri, orang ramai digalak membawa kit H1N1, yang merangkumi topeng mulut serta hidung, tisu dan sanitizer, ke mana-mana sahaja mereka pergi termasuk semasa berhari raya di rumah sanak saudara, bagi mengelak penularan jangkitan Influenza A(H1N1).

Ketua Pengarah Kesihatan Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican berkata bagi mereka yang mempunyai gejala selesema serta golongan berisiko, mereka disaran sebaik-baiknya menggunakan pengangkutan sendiri untuk balik kampung.

"Bagaimanpun jika terpaksa menggunakan pengangkutan awam, pastikan anda sentiasa memakai penutup mulut dan hidung, selain mengamalkan kebersihan tangan pada setiap masa sepanjang perjalanan," katanya dalam satu kenyataan di sini Ahad.

Beliau berkata penumpang pengangkutan awam juga perlu memastikan bahawa kertas tisu muka yang sudah digunakan dibuang ke dalam tong sampah yang ditutup supaya tidak menjadi satu sumber jangkitan.

"Setibanya di kampung, individu yang mempunyai gejala selesema perlu menjarakkan diri dari orang lain, sentiasa memakai topeng mulut dan hidung, mengamalkan adab batuk, kerap mencuci tangan dan tidak mengunjungi tempat-tempat yang sesak seperti rumah terbuka dan majlis kenduri," katanya.

Dr Mohd Ismail berkata setakat pagi ini, tiada kematian baru akibat selesema babi dilaporkan dengan kes kematian yang dicatatkan sehingga kini kekal 74 orang.

Sementara itu seramai 231 pesakit baru dengan gejala influenza-like illness (ILI) dimasukkan ke hospital untuk rawatan, katanya.

Beliau berkata daripada 255 pesakit yang disahkan positif H1N1, hanya 42 kes sedang dirawat di Unit Rawatan Rapi (ICU) di mana tujuh merupakan kes baru.

Daripada 42 kes, 81 peratus ataupun 34 kes mempunyai faktor risiko iaitu 14 penyakit kronik, tiga penyakit respiratori kronik, lapan obesiti, lapan kanak-kanak bawah 5 tahun dan satu kes hamil.

TARIKH MELIHAT ANAK BULAN

KUALA LUMPUR, 12 Sept (Bernama) -- Pejabat Penyimpan Mohor Besar Raja-Raja pada Sabtu mengumumkan sebanyak 29 tempat ditetapkan untuk melihat anak bulan Syawal pada 19 Sept bagi menentukan tarikh Aidilfitri tahun ini.

Menurut satu kenyataan, Majlis Raja-Raja telah mempersetujui bahawa cara menetapkan tarikh Aidilfitri adalah berdasarkan rukyah dan hisab dan pengisytiharan tarikh akan diumumkan pada malam Sabtu itu menerusi radio dan televisyen.

Kawasan yang ditetapkan untuk melihat anak bulan Syawal ialah di Pontian Kecil Johor; Kampung Balik Batu Tanjung Bidara, Melaka; Pantai Aceh Pulau Pinang; Teluk Kemang Negeri Sembilan; Bukit Melawati, Pulau Angsa dan Bukit Jugra di Selangor; Kampung Pulau Sayak, Pemandangan Indah Langkawi dan Menara Alor Setar di Kedah; dan pantai Pasir Panjang, Manjong, Perak.

Di Terengganu ialah di Bukit Besar Kuala Terengganu, Bukit Kemuning, Kemaman, Pulau Perhentian dan Balai Cerap Kusza, Setiu; di Kelantan di Bukit Peraksi Pasir Putih, Bukit Kampung Tembeling Kuala Krai dan Menara Bangunan PKINK Kota Baharu; dan di Pahang ialah di Bukit Tanjong Batu Nenasi, Gunung Berincang Cameron Highlands dan Bukit Pelindong, Kuantan.

Tempat melihat anak bulan Syawal di Perlis ialah di Kuala Sungai Baru; Menara Kuala Lumpur di ibu negara; Pusat Konvensyen Antarabangsa Putrajaya di Putrajaya; Tanjong Lubang Miri, Teluk Bandung Kuching dan Tanjung Batu, Bintulu di Sarawak serta Tanjung Dumpil dan Menara Universiti Malaysia Sabah di Sabah.

KEM UPAYA DIRI 1 2009-2010

Kem Upaya Diri kali I untuk sesi 2009-2010 telah diadakan bermula 11 September 2009 dan berakhir pada 13 September 2009 bertempat di Kompleks Rakan Muda Jempol.

Kem ini diadakan untuk membantu lebih kurang 100 orang pelajar terpilih dari Kolej Matrikulasi Negeri Sembilan, Kuala Pilah.

Antara aktiviti yang dijalankan ialah aktiviti ice-breaking, LDK dan pembentangan.
